Webhook Ideas: Send Empath Training Activity to Slack and Other Tools!

See Empath webhooks post training activity to Slack in a recorded demo, plus ideas for routing completions and failed knowledge checks into your tools.

Empath’s notification settings and webhooks help you stay informed about training activity without repeatedly logging into the platform to check for updates.

You can configure notifications for different audiences and use selected platform events to send updates to external tools. In this demonstration, Empath sends messages to a Slack channel when content is published, a course is assigned, and a course is completed.

For your team, that can mean fewer manual status checks, better visibility into training activity, and opportunities to connect training milestones to the workflows you already use.

A central place to manage notifications

Users with the Manager and/or Admin role can access Admin → Notification Settings.

Notifications are grouped by audience or purpose, such as learner training activity and manager reporting. Depending on the notification, you can choose who receives it, configure its frequency or digest behavior, and control in-app and email delivery.

This gives you more control over how training information reaches the people who need it. Learners and managers may need different updates; notification settings let you tailor those updates to their responsibilities.

Send selected events to external tools with webhooks

A webhook sends information to another system when an event happens in Empath. The receiving system provides a destination URL, and Empath sends event data to that address.

In the demonstration, the destination is a Slack channel. The same approach can support other tools or custom workflows when they can receive and process Empath’s webhook requests.

The webhook configuration includes a destination URL, a payload format, optional headers, and the events that should trigger delivery. The demo uses the Slack incoming webhook format; JSON is also available for destinations that need to process event data.

The event picker shown in the demonstration includes:

Event What it helps you follow
Course assigned A course has been assigned to a learner.
Course completed A learner has completed a course.
Failed knowledge check A knowledge check has been failed.
Content published Content has been published.

You can also choose whether payloads include personal data such as names and email addresses. This can help identify whose activity triggered an update; choose the setting based on what the receiving workflow needs.

The video follows three actions in Empath and shows the corresponding messages arriving in Slack.

Publish content

A demonstration course is created and published in the internal training tenant. Slack receives a Content published message showing the course title and an Open in Empath link.

This is useful when a team needs to know that new training is available without checking the course library for changes.

Assign a course

The course is assigned to a learner with a due date. Slack receives a Course assigned message following the assignment.

This illustrates how assignment activity can be surfaced in a channel that managers or training coordinators already monitor. The due date is part of the assignment example; it is not shown as a separate selectable webhook event.

Complete a course

The learner completes the single-lesson demonstration course, and Slack receives a Course completed message.

Completion updates could help managers follow progress or give a team a convenient place to recognize training milestones. Message content depends on the event, selected format, and receiving configuration; the completion message shown in this demo does not display the course title.

Messages arrive quickly in the recorded demonstration. Actual delivery timing can vary with the destination and processing involved.

Build on the event data

Slack illustrates a simple use case: an Empath event becomes a message in a channel. An automation platform or custom application could use that event data to take another action.

Possible workflows include recording completion events in a reporting system, notifying a training coordinator about a failed knowledge check, or routing published-content updates to a dedicated training channel. The video also suggests a more playful example: triggering a light or bell when someone completes training.

These are workflows you can build around the available events. They require configuration in the receiving system, which must accept the selected payload format and apply the appropriate processing or business logic. A tool’s general support for webhooks does not automatically make every workflow compatible.

What to keep in mind

Webhooks send selected event data out of Empath. They do not provide a two-way API or an interface for querying arbitrary information from the platform.

Start with a focused use case, confirm that the receiving system gets the expected message, and then build on it. Match the payload format to the destination and protect webhook URLs when sharing screenshots or recordings.

Explore what works for your team

Open Admin → Notification Settings to explore the available notifications and webhook events. A simple Slack notification is a useful starting point; from there, consider where training updates would be most useful in your existing workflow.
