Member vs Manager and Admin Views in Empath
See what members and managers or admins each see in Empath: navigation, Admin access, library filters, assignments, and account settings.

What you need
You do not need a special role to read this. To see the manager and admin side in your own tenant, you need the Manager role or higher. The Create button appears for content admins.
Your tenant's settings for self-guided training and catalog availability can limit what members see, so a member may see less than described here. Browser width matters too: in a narrow window the layout compresses and the Library filters stay hidden until you open the filter pane. Use a full-screen window to see the full layout.

Dashboard

Dashboard with the What's Next section and the See All Assigned link
Both roles land on Dashboard, and it looks almost the same. What's Next sits near the top and lists assigned training, and See All Assigned opens the full list. In a full-screen window the Quick Facts cards appear on the right side.
If you assign content, or restrict assignment to managers, What's Next and See All Assigned are how a member sees what you want them to work on. If you have not assigned a member anything, nothing appears there.

Dashboard sections showing published internal content and upcoming live streams
The Dashboard also highlights internal content Empath has published lately and upcoming live streams. Members and managers both open content straight from it, and lessons and courses play the same way for both.
Admin

Admin area open to a member's learning progress with the assignment controls visible
Admin is where managers and admins see learning progress across the tenant, find a specific member, review and manage that member's assignments, add assignments, and browse the catalog. Members have none of these screens. They depend on Library and on what has been assigned to them, which is easy to forget when you spend your day in Admin.
Controls both roles share

- A light and dark mode toggle.
- The question mark menu, with links to the knowledge base, the feature request forum, and a support request.
- The notification bell. Managers see more notifications in it than members do.
Support requests are answered by Empath team members, not an AI tool.
Profile and account settings

Open the profile menu and select My Account Settings. Members can edit their name, username, phone number, address, job title, time zone, and profile image. Under privacy and security, a member can see the sessions where they are signed in and sign out of any they should not have left open.
Members cannot change their own email address. As of October 16, 2026, changing the email on an existing account requires a support request. Admins see the same fields.
Notification preferences

Notification settings page with in-app and email options and the controls to pause notifications
Members can choose in-app (bell) and email delivery for assigned training and for courses added to the library, and can pause all email or all in-app notifications. Admins can set company defaults that override these preferences and lock them, so a member's choices apply only to settings that have not been overridden. Notification settings are covered in their own article.
Library filters and progress
Video: 10:53
Both roles have the same filters in Library: My Library, Bookmarked, Assigned, Completed, In Progress, and Not Started. For a member these filters are the way to see what they have finished, what is in progress, and what they have not started. Managers usually use the Admin reporting screens instead.

A member's assigned course showing 1% complete in the Library
Once a member starts a course, their percentage complete shows in Library and on the Dashboard. Opening the course shows a check mark on each finished lesson, and knowledge checks read Not taken until attempted. A finished course shows as completed, leaves the assigned views, and appears under Completed.
When a manager assigns a course

Member view after an assignment, with a bell notification and the course listed in What's Next
The member gets a bell notification and, depending on your notification settings, one or more emails. The course is also in What's Next, See All Assigned, and Library with the Assigned filter. What's Next orders content by assignment order and due date, so a course assigned a moment ago may not show in its visible list. A member may need to refresh to see it.
Marked complete by an admin
Video: 17:00
A completed course as the member sees it, with the knowledge checks reading Not taken
When an admin marks a course complete, the member sees it as completed, but its knowledge checks still read Not taken. That is how managers and admins tell a member who finished the course from one whose course was marked complete.
Video: 18:27
Admin view of a member's learning progress showing the course at 100 percent complete
Members cannot see manager-level reporting, including that a course was marked complete by an admin. In the member's recent activity in Admin, a marked-complete course shows its lessons completed at the same timestamp.
Empath recommends marking content complete only when you have a specific reason, such as correcting a learning error.
Self-assignment and assignment requests
Video: 20:02
Member browsing the Library catalog before opening a course they are not assigned to
By default, members cannot assign themselves content. They can request assignment from a manager, which keeps members from picking content on their own and keeps a manager accountable for what each member works on. You can change this in your learner controls, which are covered in their own article.

Notice shown to a member who opens an unassigned course, with the Request Assignment option
When a member opens a course they are not assigned to, Empath tells them they are not assigned, knowledge checks will not be available, and progress will not be tracked. They can keep viewing lessons without tracking, and they are stopped at the first knowledge check. Or they can choose Request Assignment, and the course shows a request access state until a manager approves it.

Manager notification reading Assignment request from your team, with the option to approve
The member chooses which manager receives the request, and by default it goes to the member's assigned manager. An admin who is not that member's manager does not get the notification. The manager sees an "Assignment request from your team" notification and approves from it. The member refreshes and can start the course. Empath does not send the member a separate approval message.
