What webhooks do (and when to use them)
Learn how Empath webhooks send training events to a system you control, and when to use them instead of a shared inbox.
This article explains what Empath webhooks do and whether you need them. They're an advanced feature, usually set up with help from someone technical.
What is a webhook?
A webhook sends a message from Empath to a web address you control each time something happens in training. Your system (a PSA, an automation tool, or a Slack channel) can then act on it, for example by creating a ticket or posting a message.
Empath can send these events:
- Course assigned
- Course completed
- Failed knowledge check
- Content published: a new course, knowledge check or pathway is published.
Webhook or shared inbox?
- If your PSA can turn emails into tickets, sending a copy to a shared inbox is usually simpler. See “Send a copy to a shared inbox (e.g. your PSA)”.
- Use a webhook if you want structured data for automation, or to post into Slack.
Good to know
- Only managers and admins can create or change webhooks.
- Webhooks send every event of the types you choose, whatever your other notification settings or learners' own settings are.
- If you see Webhook delivery is not enabled for your account yet, contact your Partner Success Manager.
