What does locking do?
Every row starts Unlocked, which means learners can turn it on or off for themselves on their own Notification settings page.
When you lock a row, your choice is frozen for everyone:
- Locked: learners can't change this. What's on stays on, and what's off stays off.
- Locked off: you've locked a row with every delivery unticked. Learners can't turn it on.
Steps
- Go to Admin → Notification Settings → Notification types.
- Set the row's In-app (bell) and Email boxes the way you want them.
- Click the lock on that row. Its label changes from Unlocked to Locked (or Locked off if nothing is ticked).
- To undo, click the lock again. It changes back to Unlocked.

Good to know
- A common setup for compliance: lock Assigned training, Due dates, renewals & expiring credentials and Overdue training.
- On their own page, learners see the lock and the message Your admin has locked this setting.
- A lock stops learners changing that row. But a learner who pauses all their email or unsubscribes from Empath emails won't get email, even for locked rows. See “Pause your own notifications” and “Unsubscribe from Empath notification emails”.
- Pausing notifications for your whole company also stops locked notifications. See “Pause all notifications for your company”.
- Empath Unite rows can't be locked.
