How Do I Request Access to a Course in Empath?

Request assignment to a course you are not assigned to, choose which managers receive it, and see what your manager sees.

If a course button says Request Access instead of Start Learning, you are not assigned to it. Request assignment so your progress is tracked and you can take knowledge checks.

Before you start

You need a member account in your company's Empath account. Your company's admin controls whether members must request assignment. If a course shows Start Learning or Continue Learning, you can begin. If it shows Request Access, follow the steps below. Watch at 0:32

Request assignment
  1. Open the course you want. Check the button. If it says Request Access, you need to request assignment. Watch at 0:51
  2. Select Request Access. Empath shows a "You're not assigned" message. It explains that you cannot access knowledge checks and your progress will not be tracked. Lessons you watch will not appear on your report card or dashboard, and if the course requires a knowledge check to move forward, you will not be able to complete it. Watch at 1:13 If you select Ok, I understand, you can still open the course and play lessons, but none of your progress is saved. Knowledge checks show "You're not assigned. Only users assigned to this course can take the quiz."
  3. Request assignment. If you dismissed the message, select Request Access again. In the message, select Request assignment. Empath sends your request to the managers listed under Request from these managers. Watch at 2:29 To choose different managers, select the edit icon next to that list. Search for one or more managers and check each one you want. Then select Send Request. You can pick one manager or several. Only the managers you select are notified. Each one receives an email and an in-app notification.
  4. Wait for approval. A short "request sent" message appears in the bottom corner of the screen. The course does not show up in your assigned content until a manager approves the request. To check, open your See All Assignments view. Watch at 3:32
Confirm you are assigned

After a manager approves the request:

  1. Refresh the page.
  2. Confirm the course shows as assigned.
  3. Check that the button now reads Continue Learning or Start Learning.
  4. Confirm knowledge checks no longer block you. Your progress is now tracked. Watch at 4:40

To see everything assigned to you, see How to View Assigned Content in Empath.

What your manager sees

Your manager gets a bell notification reading "Assignment request from your team," showing who asked and which course. It has an Approve button and a Review request button that opens the course so they can check it first. A manager can also assign the content manually from the course screen. Watch at 4:04

They also receive an email saying you requested the content, with a link that opens it so they can decide whether to approve. Watch at 5:07

Troubleshooting

The course is still not in my assigned list

Refresh the page first. If it is still missing, the managers you selected may not have approved it yet. Your request reached only the managers you chose, so if you picked someone who does not assign training, ask your own manager to assign it, or send a new request to a different manager.

I do not see a Request Access button or I cannot find the course

Your company can set Empath to show members only the content assigned to them. If the course is not visible, ask your manager to assign it.

I was assigned, but I cannot take the knowledge check or my progress is not tracking

Tell your manager. They can check your assignment on your Learning Progress tab. See How Does Assignment and Progress Tracking Work?
