FAQ + Tips & Tricks for Content Creators

Welcome, Empathians! Whether you’re uploading your first training video or polishing a written lesson, this guide covers the basics of creating content inside your Empath tenant. These tips are meant to help you make great content quickly; no pro studio required.

📹 VIDEO CREATION IN EMPATH

Can I record or edit videos directly in Empath?

Empath lets you record videos in your browser; no special software needed! You can record your camera, microphone, screen, or any combination of the three.

👉 Important: Empath is not a full video editor. The built-in recorder is designed for quick, one-take recordings like:

  • A technician explaining how they solved a tricky ticket

  • A team lead walking through a recurring process

  • A short “how-to” demo or company announcement

If you want to edit, trim, or combine clips, you’ll need to use an external editor first (see below).

What gear do I actually need?

You don’t need a fancy setup; most Empath Partner content is made with everyday tools.

  • Camera: Any modern webcam or laptop camera will work.

  • Microphone: Your webcam mic is fine to start, but upgrading to a basic USB mic (like a Blue Yeti or Logitech Snowball) can make a huge difference.

  • Lighting: Lighting matters more than camera quality! Use lamps or natural light to brighten your face evenly. Before buying anything, experiment with lights you already have.

🎧 Pro Tip: If you’re going to upgrade one thing, make it your microphone. Poor audio distracts learners more than low-resolution video.

What if I want to record my screen?

Empath’s screen recorder can capture your screen and microphone at the same time; perfect for showing ticket workflows, RMM steps, or platform tutorials.

  • If possible, use two monitors, one for what you’re recording, and one for notes or managing the recording session.

  • Keep your desktop tidy and close unrelated windows to avoid distractions.

Can I edit my videos after recording?

Empath’s recorder doesn’t have editing tools (no trimming, transitions, or overlays). If you’d like to polish your videos, we recommend simple, free editors like:

  • Windows: Clipchamp or CapCut

  • Mac: iMovie or CapCut

  • All platforms: Canva, Scribe, or Loom (export then upload to Empath)

When you’re done editing, just upload the finished file directly into Empath.

Can I use YouTube or other hosted videos?

Absolutely! Use Empath’s YouTube Import tool to bring in existing videos quickly.
This works great for vendor content, certifications, or your company’s internal YouTube channel.

📝 TEXT & LESSON CREATION IN EMPATH

How do I create a written lesson?

You can add text-based lessons directly inside any course.

  • Use the text editor to type or paste in your content.

  • You can include headers, links, bullet points, and images.

  • Keep lessons short and focused; smaller chunks help learners retain more.

Can I format text like I would in Word or Google Docs?

Mostly, yes! Empath supports:
✅ Bold, italics, lists, and hyperlinks
✅ Images and embedded media
✅ Basic web-based Unicode layout tools like columns, tables, and dividers
🚫 Custom fonts or the advanced editing features you’d find in a full word processor (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs) aren’t present

If you’re writing something long-form (like a detailed SOP), we recommend drafting in Word or Google Docs first; then paste it into Empath and adjust the formatting.

What happens if I forget to hit Save?

The lesson editor does autosave, but with longer form text content, why take the chance.  Make saving a habit.
Tip: Save early and often; especially after adding large chunks of text or images.

Can I add videos or images to a text lesson?

Yes! You can embed video links or upload images directly inside your text lesson to make it more visual and engaging.

Examples:

  • Drop in a short screen recording explaining a form or workflow. (As an embeddable video)

  • Add screenshots to illustrate a step-by-step guide.

💡 GENERAL TIPS

  • Keep it short and conversational. Learners retain more when lessons are 5–10 minutes max.

  • Use real examples. Record real screens, real processes, and real language your team uses.

  • Title clearly. Name lessons after the outcome, not the topic (e.g., “How to Log Time Correctly” instead of “Time Entry Overview”).

  • Preview before publishing. Watch or read your lesson as a learner to make sure everything displays properly.
